As people increasingly crave nature and vacation, the home furnishing industry must expand its designs to include outdoor spaces. With homes and living environments transitioning to fully integrated indoor-outdoor spaces, the outdoor area becomes a vibrant part of modern lifestyles.
Artie is a high-end outdoor furniture brand that believes in the design philosophy of “Beauty Speaks for Itself,” “Seamless Design,” and “Following the Rules of Nature.” The brand’s product series design integrates various styles, including romantic, natural, artistic, passionate, and rustic luxury, showcasing a new and exciting lifestyle – Home as a Vacation Destination.
For the past 30 years, Artie has focused on producing high-quality handmade outdoor furniture. The goal is to establish an international high-end handmade outdoor furniture brand for China and showcase its exceptional manufacturing. Artie prioritizes quality, innovation, and improving people’s lives, which aims to build a century-old legacy by staying competitive in the market.
However, establishing a century-old brand is heavily reliant on the strength of design. What actions has Artie made in design over the years? What methods does Artie use to consolidate the design foundation step by step? And, what views does it have on the cultural connotation of outdoor design? Aiming at this series of questions, Arthur Cheng, the president of Artie Garden International Ltd., will reveal these answers.
Numerous Award-Winning Products | Redefining Home
Artie values originality in its designs and keeps a keen eye on evolving design trends. In recent years, Artie has been actively nurturing new Chinese designers while maintaining long-term partnerships with leading designers from Europe and America. With the help of these top international designers, Artie has gained new inspiration, creativity, and insights into aesthetics, philosophy of life, and cultural trends. As a result, Artie has secured 219 design patents in both the EU and China.
Artie’s original designs have earned numerous accolades both domestically and internationally. Notably, the Bari single swing garnered the 2022 German Red Dot Design Award and the 2021 Kapok China Product Design Supreme Award. The Sailing shower screen was named one of the Top Ten Innovative Design Awards at the 2010 Cologne International Outdoor Furniture Fair SPOGA, while the Moore outdoor sofa won the 2017 American Pinnacle Design Asia-Pacific Award. Also, the New Freedom outdoor sofa was honored with the 2019 China Furniture Product Innovation Gold Award. Other award-winning designs from Artie include the Silk & Bamboo Pavilion Sunbed, which won the 2014 Kapok China Product Design Supreme Award, and the Marina Baby Swing, which took home the first prize at the 6th Governor Cup Industrial Design Award Furniture Special Competition in 2012.
“Consumers now prioritize quality of life and emotional well-being, leading to changes in home design. For example, personalized and compact furniture meets individual needs and helps manage stress. As a result, the definition of home is evolving dynamically, with each designer offering unique insights,” Arthur explained.
In 2022, the first Artie Cup International Space Design Competition was held by Artie, attracting numerous creative and innovative entries that embodied the concept of Redefining Home and showcased the integration and innovation of various spaces.
Arthur Cheng believes that the post-pandemic era will usher in a shift towards home design that prioritizes intelligence, multi-functionality, natural environmental protection, and aesthetic awareness. In line with this, Artie is launching the 2nd Artie Cup in 2023, inviting designers globally to collaborate and explore future lifestyles and design trends.
Inherit The Traditional Core | Ethnic Design Leads Outdoor Art
To integrate the old and the new in design, Artie must draw on the strengths of traditional and excellent culture while staying attuned to the needs and interests of the public. Therefore, it requires using new forms and ideas to express traditional meanings. At Artie, they always root their new designs in the conventional essence of hand-woven rattan.
People usually think that outdoor furniture originated in the West, where it became popular after World War II as individuals in developed countries in Europe and the United States began to embrace a more leisurely lifestyle. As a result, many people associate outdoor furniture with Western culture, assuming that Westerners value outdoor living and nature and that designers draw inspiration from Western elements when creating outdoor furniture.
“However, Chinese culture has a rich history of appreciating nature and outdoor life. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Chinese played music such as the flute and the stringed instrument in the mountains and beside rivers, reflecting their deep understanding of the beauty of nature. In terms of philosophy, the ancient Chinese emphasized the importance of respecting the way of heaven and the unity of heaven and man. Therefore, by drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese philosophical thought, Artie’s furniture design can better reflect and spread Chinese culture.”
Arthur shared that Artie drew inspiration from Chinese mahogany furniture’s arhat bed during the first year of its original design in 2007. Since then, Artie has designed various outdoor furniture pieces, including the “Ming” series of sofas and Dharma swings.
Designs that showcase local culture have a better chance of being recognized and appreciated globally. When we prioritize national design, it’s also the most opportune moment to showcase it to the world. Artie will keep exploring hand-woven rattan art under the guidance of Chinese philosophy and culture to enhance the international brand of high-end handmade outdoor furniture from China.
「Hommy」 Gracefully Enters CIFF
The 2023 China International Furniture Fair (Guangzhou) will be held March 18-21 with the theme “Design Trend, Global Trade, Full Supply Chain.” The exhibition will bring together top design brands and high-end outdoor suppliers, creating more opportunities for communication within the industry. Arthur Cheng, president of Artie Garden, hopes the platform will promote higher quality and larger-scale cross-industry and international exchanges, allowing more original and outstanding designs to be appreciated and protected.
In this CIFF, Artie will showcase a series of original design products, empowering living spaces and creating more comfortable and high-end outdoor experiences. Among them, Artie will be featuring its new sofa, Hommy, which takes inspiration from the upper part of the Chinese character for “巢(nest)” – “巛” with a refined and natural design. We hope that it will be well-received by everyone.
